Methodology: blenders

This is the scoring model for blenders. It is fixed before any assessment and applies to every ranking in this product class.

Every blender ranking uses the same four criteria and the same fixed weights. The weights are set before any product is assessed, and they appear on every ranking page. Three of them are arithmetic and account for 65% of the score between them: motor power in watts, jar capacity in litres, and the material of that jar. Power and capacity come straight from the stated specifications. Material we score by a fixed rule set before any assessment: glass above Tritan above plastic, because glass does not discolour, scratch or hold onto smells, and is still clear after years. That glass is heavier and can break is a fair objection, and we name it on every product where it applies — but we do not reverse the rule per appliance, because then the outcome would drive the judgement rather than the other way round. Two caveats apply to power: there is no shared measurement standard, and above roughly a thousand watts the motor design says more than the wattage. So it counts, but no more heavily than capacity. The fourth criterion, everyday use in practice, carries 35% and is a judgement. That is deliberately the heaviest part, and with blenders it almost always comes down to one question: does the machine take frozen fruit and ice smooth without you having to stop and stir. That appears in no specification, and it is exactly where the disappointments are. We base that judgement on what the manufacturer documents and on what owners report in reviews at the retailers selling the product. Where those two diverge, practice weighs more. In this category some reviews came about through testing panels or in collaboration with the manufacturer; those are identifiable and carry less weight with us. The total score is the weighted sum of the four sub-scores, and the order of the list follows from that total rather than from an editorial preference. We earn a commission on referrals to retailers, but commission plays no part in this calculation.
