Methodology: air fryers

Every air fryer ranking uses the same four criteria and the same fixed weights. The weights are set before any product is assessed, and they appear on every ranking page. Three of them are arithmetic and account for 65% of the score between them: load capacity in kilos, volume in litres, and maximum temperature. Those three come straight from the stated specifications and are compared within this ranking. We weight load capacity above volume, because litres describe the space and kilos describe what you can actually fit; a tall basket counts in litres but not in what actually cooks. Maximum temperature counts because the difference between two hundred and two hundred and forty degrees decides whether you can sear and crisp rather than only cook through. Power is deliberately not a criterion: on air fryers the wattage tracks the size almost exactly, so including it would count the same property a third time. The fourth criterion, everyday use in practice, carries 35% and is a judgement. That is deliberately the heaviest part: an air fryer that is awkward to clean, or whose presets are wrong, ends up in a cupboard within a year however large it is. We base that judgement on what the manufacturer documents and on what owners report in reviews at the retailers selling the product. Where those two diverge, practice weighs more. In this category some reviews are written by testing panels who received the appliance on free loan; those are identifiable and carry less weight with us than a review from someone who bought it themselves. The total score is the weighted sum of the four sub-scores, and the order of the list follows from that total rather than from an editorial preference. We earn a commission on referrals to retailers, but commission plays no part in this calculation.

Everyday use in practice

Beoordeel hoe het apparaat is om mee te leven, uit twee bronnen samen. Ten eerste wat de fabrikant documenteert: of de manden en binnenpan in de vaatwasser mogen, of twee zones onafhankelijk in te stellen zijn en tegelijk klaar kunnen zijn, of de bediening voorinstellingen kent en of die aanpasbaar zijn. Ten tweede wat eigenaren melden in reviews bij de winkels waar het product te koop is, met nadruk op wat pas na weken blijkt: hoe makkelijk de manden werkelijk schoon worden, of de antiaanbaklaag heel blijft, of de voorinstellingen bruikbaar zijn of altijd worden overschreven, en hoeveel ruimte het apparaat op het aanrecht opeist. Waar documentatie en praktijk uiteenlopen, weegt de praktijk zwaarder. Alleen terugkerende patronen tellen mee, geen losse ervaringen, en een klacht telt pas als patroon wanneer die bij onafhankelijke eigenaren terugkeert. Let er bij deze productcategorie in het bijzonder op dat een deel van de reviews geschreven is door testpanels die het apparaat gratis in bruikleen kregen; die zijn herkenbaar aan formuleringen als 'mocht ik testen' en wegen minder zwaar dan een review van iemand die het apparaat zelf gekocht heeft. Bij elke beoordeling staat welke documentatie en welke reviewpagina's gelezen zijn en wanneer.
