Methodology: robot vacuums

This is the scoring model for robot vacuums. It is fixed before any assessment and applies to every ranking in this product class.

Every robot vacuum ranking uses the same six criteria and the same fixed weights. The weights are set before any product is assessed, and they appear on every ranking page. Five of them are arithmetic and account for 65% of the score between them: suction power, noise level, the threshold height the machine still clears, how far the mop lifts over carpet, and the body height that decides whether it fits under your sofa or cabinet. Those five come straight from the stated specifications and are compared within this ranking. The sixth criterion, everyday use in practice, carries 35% and is a judgement. That is deliberately the heaviest part: with a robot that drives around every day for years, what decides whether you stay happy with it is the software, not the suction figure on paper. We base that judgement on what the manufacturer documents and on what owners report in reviews at the retailers selling the product. Where those two diverge, practice weighs more. We do not collect those reviews ourselves, retailers show a positively skewed selection of them, and we cannot verify that a reviewer actually bought the product. So only a pattern that recurs across independent owners carries weight, and every score states where we read and when. Price is deliberately not a criterion: suction in pascal is a manufacturer figure that does not translate proportionally into cleaning results, so a price per pascal would imply a precision that is not there. The price is shown for every product, but it does not determine the order. The total score is the weighted sum of the six sub-scores, and the order of the list follows from that total rather than from an editorial preference. A model only enters the comparison if enough owner experience is available to assess that heaviest criterion; models with only a handful of reviews are left out until there are more, even when the specifications look good. We earn a commission on referrals to retailers, but commission plays no part in this calculation.
